Why extinguisher type matters

Common fire classifications
Fires are broadly grouped by the type of material or risk involved: solid combustible materials like wood, paper and textiles; flammable liquids; flammable gases; and fires involving live electrical equipment. Understanding which risks are present in a given area is the starting point for choosing appropriate equipment.
Placement and accessibility
Beyond the extinguisher itself, where and how it's mounted matters. Equipment should be clearly visible, unobstructed, and positioned along natural routes of travel so it can be reached quickly if needed.
